To describe the position of a table lamp on a study table:
- Consider the flat surface of the table as a plane and the lamp as a point on it.
- Choose two perpendicular edges of the table (say, the shorter edge and the longer edge).
- Measure the perpendicular distance of the lamp from the shorter edge, let it be $25\text{ cm}$.
- Measure the perpendicular distance of the lamp from the longer edge, let it be $30\text{ cm}$.
Therefore, the position of the table lamp can be written as an ordered pair (25, 30) or (30, 25), depending on the reference edge taken first.
